The power of community during times of change
I am an introvert and with that comes the need for alone time and probably more than most people need. Even though I am an introvert, I also need a community for support and this need has grown over the past year. I think it’s for several reasons. COVID has certainly played a role. No amount of Zoom meetings and phone calls can replace in-person connection. I’ve also experienced a lot of change including a new career and relocating.
I’ve adopted several communities; two coaching groups, a co-working community, a marketing support group, and of course, my family and friends. It’s been an enlightening experience. The more communities I connect with, the stronger my desire is to connect.
The Essence of Community
Shared Understanding: they provide a safe space where you can discuss your experiences, your successes, and your fears. You also feel a sense of belonging and validation.
Collective Wisdom: there’s nothing better than sharing your experience and insights and hearing from others on how they are maneuvering change and transition. I always learn something from my communities and appreciate and value the various perspectives.
Emotional Support: we need empathy, compassion, and encouragement during times of change. Your communities can offer that in spades. The mere fact that you are not alone in whatever you are going through can significantly bolster your resilience.
The Power of Connection
Accountability and Motivation: your communities can hold you accountable for your intentions and commitments which will encourage you to stay motivated.
Collaboration and Innovation: the saying “two heads are better than one” is amplified by the number of people in your community. Collaboration can lead to creative problem-solving and possibly new opportunities that otherwise may remain hidden.
Celebrating Successes: sharing successes with others fosters a sense of collective achievement and you will begin to believe that you can overcome obstacles.
Cultivating Community
Seek Out Supportive Networks: seek out communities that align with your values, interests, and goals. I expanded my community when I started coaching. I engaged with like-minded individuals who offered support and inspiration when I needed it most during my career change and relocation.
Foster Authentic Connections: build genuine relationships through trust, respect, and vulnerability. Be sure to share your own experiences and be receptive to the experiences of others.
Contribute and Pay It Forward: actively participate in your community, offering your time, expertise, and support. Pay forward the kindness and support you receive even beyond your community.
I've experienced firsthand the transformative impact of community, especially during times of change. The support, connection, and collective wisdom that my communities offer have helped me navigate some major life transitions. Knowing that not only one person but a group of people have my back keeps me motivated to stay the course.
