I’m Relocating! Important things to keep in mind for any major transition.

It’s happening! I’ve packed up all of my worldly possessions and relocating. I’ve lived in Washington DC for 10 years which is the longest I’ve lived anywhere post college. It usually takes me a long time to make a decision to relocate - on average over a year. I think about the why and the where until I can’t stand it anymore and then I just go for it.

I have come to realize a few things that help me make any major decision whether it is relocating, finding a new job, changing careers or any number of transitions.

I’ve done it before and I can do it again - My last post about managing transitions mentioned moving to three major cities and a few places in between and the fact that I am on my third career

Nothing is permanent - You can try anything and if it doesn’t work, you can make another decision. I am not minimizing the effort it takes to make and then execute on a major transition. It most certainly takes courage and energy. What I do know is that I do not regret the decisions I’ve made to relocate, or change jobs and careers. One word of advice: give yourself a full year to adjust to whatever change you have made.

I have the power to choose how I handle change - Change is a big deal. It can be daunting, scary and messy AND it can also be exciting, liberating, invigorating, motivating, life changing…

I have an amazing support system - I could not have done this without the support and assistance of my friends and family. In fact this move has proven this in so many ways - helping me pack, giving me a place to stay, feeding me, listening to my worries, picking up moving supplies, giving my plants and other items I don’t want to move a new home, throwing me an amazing farewell party, transporting me and my belongings from DC to my new home…and the list goes on. Rely on your support network. They want to help. Let them!

Here’s to what’s next!
