get out of your own way! Tips for moving beyond the fear.

Most of us have gotten in our own way at one time or another. The culprit is fear - fear of judgement, fear of failure, fear of rejection - and the list goes on. I can attest to the fact that I have experienced this more than I care to admit. Getting in my own way has led me to live a small life. It’s certainly a safe existence AND it’s not enough.

Tips for getting out of your own way:

  • Identify your fear - What is the fear that is getting in your way?

  • Pressure test your fear - For example, if you fear failure, think about a time you actually failed. What happened? Did your world implode (likely not!)? Did you survive the experience? Did you learn from it?

  • Take action in small steps - Once you’ve gotten fear out of the way, take small steps to get to where you want to go (ok, let’s be real, fear may still be there and now that you understand your fear, you are going to do it anyway). I cannot stress enough the importance of taking small steps. Slow and steady wins the race.

  • Give yourself credit - Acknowledge the wins. Every small step is a win.

  • Write it all down - Record you fears, your evaluation of your fears, and your small steps. Check off every time you accomplish a small step. And any time you doubt yourself, review it. It helps!
